Author Interview – Demi Hungerford

demi hungerford

I want to start my author interviews with a romance writer I met in an online writing community a couple of years ago. Demi Hungerford. An avid bird lover, Demi spends her time hand raising hookbills and finches with her husband of 19 years, who she met online. Solid proof you can meet the person of your dreams on the Internet.

After working for her local government for 24 years, she threw her hat into the romance writing ring. She writes great erotic Regency Romances and hot contemporary paranormal romance as Roxanna Haley. As D. L. Hungerford she wows her audiences with sweet contemporary paranormal romance.

Without further ado, I give you Demi Hungerford.

You like to write romance, do you live a romantic life?

Demi: For various reasons, I lived a very lonely life until I turned 40. That’s when I met my honey, the love of my life. I took a chance and got to know him, and three months later he asked me to marry him. We’ve been together for 21 years and married for 19. I wrote romance novels until I met him because I was missing that in my real life. I stopped writing for some years while he met all of my romance needs. Now, not that anything has changed, but the kids are grown and I am retired, so I’m back to writing. He likes being my research test subject.

Aww, your love story gives us single gals hope. When you do sit down to write, do you use a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?

Demi: I write on a desktop computer, with an ergo keyboard and trackball mouse. I used to write lots of things out longhand and then transcribe.

In your experience, where do you see publishing going in the future?

Demi: As a member of Romance Writers of America, I get lots of industry news. I think publishers are just as confused as everyone else as far as the future of publishing. They want something fresh and new, just like what another house is publishing. They can’t tell you what that fresh, new thing is, but they will know it when they see it. For me, self-publishing is perfect. I set my own deadlines, I get my books out, I have total control over covers and so on. I just need to find the key to marketing and all will work out. I think the future is going to hold many more changes such as happened with eBooks. I think writers will start co-ops to help each other out in self-publishing.

As a self-publisher, how much of your writing time do you devote to marketing your books?

Demi: I spend some time on the weekends Tweeting and posting on Facebook. I haven’t really done a good job at getting my work out there. I hope to keep working on that.

I hear ya. Marketing is an art form. For my last question, I would love to know, what is your favorite quote?

Demi: Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself. — Rumi

Thank you so much. It was an honor to interview you, Demi
